“I saved the truth.”
Richard studied her face.
Memories flickered faintly in his mind.
An office assistant delivering files.
A shy smile.
A brief conversation years ago.
“I didn’t know,” he said softly.
Laura closed her eyes for a moment.
“I know.”
Emily looked between them.
“You know each other?”
Laura reached for her daughter’s hand.
“Yes.”
Emily frowned.
“But you said he didn’t know.”
Laura looked at Richard again.
“That night… eight years ago… he barely remembered meeting me.”
Richard’s mind raced.
“What night?”
Laura took a slow breath.
“The charity gala.”
The memory came back suddenly.
A corporate charity event at the Blackwood Tower.
Too many drinks.
Too many meetings.
A young assistant helping him back to his office after a dizzy spell.
Laura continued speaking slowly.
“You collapsed in your office.”
“You were exhausted.”
“I stayed to make sure you were okay.”
Richard’s eyes widened slightly.
“I remember feeling sick.”
Laura nodded.
“You kept apologizing for the mess on your desk.”
Emily listened with wide eyes.
Richard spoke carefully.
“What happened after that?”
Laura looked down.
“We talked.”
“About your company.”
“About how lonely you were.”
She hesitated.
“It was just one night.”
Richard felt the pieces slowly fall into place.
“And Emily…”
Laura squeezed her daughter’s hand.
“…is the result.”
The room fell silent.
Emily looked back and forth between them.
“So… he really is my dad?”
Laura nodded gently.
“Yes.”
Emily stared at Richard.
Not scared.
Not confused.
Just curious.
Richard didn’t know what to say.
He had built skyscrapers.
Negotiated billion-dollar deals.
But nothing in his life had prepared him for this moment.
Finally he said the only honest thing he could.
“I didn’t know.”
Emily nodded.
“I figured.”
Laura suddenly tensed slightly.
“There’s something else.”
Richard leaned closer.
“What?”
Her voice dropped.
“Marcus.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“What about him?”
Laura struggled to sit up slightly.
“He’s been stealing from your company.”
Richard frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
Laura shook her head weakly.
“I found the accounts.”
“Shell companies.”
“Hidden transfers.”
Richard felt cold.
“How much?”
Laura whispered the number.
“Almost three billion dollars.”
Richard’s heart stopped.
“What?”
Emily didn’t understand the number.
But Richard did.
Three billion dollars.
That was enough to destroy even his empire.
Laura grabbed his sleeve weakly.
“That’s why Victoria helped him.”
Richard’s mind raced.
“They needed the divorce settlement.”
Laura nodded.
“If they got the billion dollars…”
“…they could cover the missing money.”
Richard stepped back slowly.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The pregnancy.
The divorce.
The manipulation.
It had all been a cover.
But Laura wasn’t finished.
“There’s one more thing,” she said.
Richard looked at her.
“What?”
Her voice trembled.
“The money isn’t the worst part.”
A chill ran down Richard’s spine.
“What do you mean?”
Laura whispered the words slowly.
“Marcus didn’t just steal the money.”
“He invested it.”
“In what?” Richard asked.
Laura’s eyes filled with fear.
“In people who don’t forgive failure.”
Richard felt the room grow colder.
“Meaning?”
Laura’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“The kind of people who send men with guns when their money disappears.”
Richard’s blood ran cold.
Because at that exact moment—
The hospital hallway outside erupted with shouting.
Footsteps.
Heavy.
Fast.
Then a nurse screamed.
And someone outside the room yelled three words that made Richard’s heart stop.
“Everybody get down!”
