What's the ideal daily dose of coffee?
Dr. Wen reminds us that "up to 400 mg of caffeine per day, or about four cups of filter coffee, is a safe dose for most adults."
This equates to approximately:
4 cups of filter coffee,
or 3 espressos,
or 2 large Americanos.
It also increases the risk of side effects: tremors, irritability, and insomnia.
Some tips for drinking coffee safely:
Choose filter coffee or hand-ground coffee, which is milder and less acidic.
Don't drink coffee too late in the evening, especially after 4 p.m. Make sure you
drink enough: alternate a cup of coffee with a glass of water.
Limit your sugar and flavored syrups: they mask the natural properties of coffee.
Listen to your body: if you feel nervous or have palpitations, drink less coffee.
