“The Shadow That Took Her Place”

Part 2: The Thing That Didn’t Leave

Elena didn’t remember running.

Only that she was suddenly in the hallway again, gripping the wall so hard her nails cracked against the paint.

Behind her, the bedroom door was still open.

Still glowing with that warm, false calm.

And inside it—

Silence.

Not peaceful silence.

The other kind.

The kind that listens back.

“Daniel…” she whispered again, weaker this time.

No answer.

She forced herself to look.

Daniel was still in bed.

Still asleep.

His arm still wrapped around Sofia.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

As if nothing had just happened.

As if she had imagined the voice… the shadow… the eyes.

But Elena knew she hadn’t.

Because Sofia had turned her head.

Slowly.

And was now staring directly at the door.

At her.

Elena stepped inside.

One step.

Then another.

Her body felt чужe, disconnected, like she was moving through water.

“Baby…” she said softly. “Sofia, wake up…”

Sofia didn’t blink.

Didn’t move.

Just watched her.

And then—

She smiled again.

This time, Daniel stirred.

“Everything okay?” he murmured, half-asleep.

Elena quickly forced a breath.

“Yeah… I just… had a nightmare.”

A lie.

A desperate, shaking lie.

Daniel adjusted his grip on Sofia and went back to sleep within seconds.

But Elena couldn’t move her eyes away from the child.

Because Sofia’s lips moved again.

Silently.

Forming words without sound.

Then came the whisper.

Not from Sofia’s mouth.

From somewhere else in the room.

“Don’t wake him.”

Elena froze.

The lamp flickered again.

And in that brief stutter of light—

She saw it.

Not a shadow on the wall this time.

But something standing beside the bed.

Not fully formed.

Not fully human.

Just an outline made of absence, like the light refused to touch it.

It tilted its head toward her.

As if curious.

Elena stepped back.
